Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a
condition that can occur when the ovaries are stimulated too much, usually
during fertility treatments. This happens when medications used to help produce
eggs cause the ovaries to swell and produce too many eggs.
What Are the Symptoms?
Women generally experience mild symptoms but can
vary from moderate to severe.

Bloating sensation
·
Pain in the abdomen
·
Nausea or vomiting
·
Diarrhoea
·
Rapid weight gain
·
Shortness of breath
Who is at Risk?
·
Young & Lean women
·
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
·
A high response to fertility medications
·
Higher dose of injections
·
More no of follicles
·
High level of Estradiol hormone
·
Using HCG injection for Trigger
What should be done?
Women at risk are explained about the probable symptoms of OHSS and are asked to report to hospital if they face any of them for an evaluation of the severity.Assessment is done by clinical examination which includes weight check, abdominal & pelvic examination. Certain blood tests and abdominal pelvic scan is done to decide the plan of management.
Can it be prevented?
There are many strategies which are adopted in
high risk women to prevent OHSS. Women are asked for frequent scans, prescribed
tablets or adjust dosages of injections to help prevent OHSS.
How is it treated?
Treatment for OHSS usually focuses on managing symptoms. This may include:

Staying hydrated (drinking plenty of fluids)
·
Pain management
·
Treating nausea /vomiting
·
Close monitoring of your condition- may need Daily visits to hospital and
blood investigations
In severe cases, women may need to stay in the
hospital for more intensive care.
While OHSS can be concerning, many women
experience only mild symptoms that resolve on their own. Always feel
