Oocyte Retrieval – What to expect?

Parenthood is a wonderful journey and fertility-challenged couples try to achieve it through various fertility treatments. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is one such advanced fertility treatment that helps couples embrace their bundle of joy. Many are not completely aware of the entire process of IVF and how to prepare themselves for the journey. In IVF, the major process of fusion of the egg and sperm happens outside the human body in the lab after which the embryo formed is placed in the woman’s uterus for further growth. The oocyte retrieval procedure is one of the important steps in IVF. Get ready to know in detail about oocyte retrieval.

What is an oocyte retrieval procedure?

Oocyte retrieval also known as egg retrieval involves the collection of eggs (oocytes) from a woman's ovaries for fertilization outside the body. The woman is given hormonal injections to stimulate egg production. Once the eggs mature, the oocytes are retrieved under anesthesia.

How to prepare yourself for Oocyte Retrieval?

1. Ovarian Stimulation: This is a phase that happens prior to the egg retrieval where you receive injections continuously for 9-12 days depending on your response.

2. Trigger Shot: A trigger injection (hCG or similar medication) is given 34-35 hours before the retrieval to stimulate the maturation of eggs. It is essential to take this injection at the exact time as advised by the doctor.

3. Fasting Guidelines:

Typically, oocyte recovery is performed under sedation or anesthesia. So, you must fast for at least 6-8 hours - no food /water/tea/coffee in the morning of the procedure.

4. Hygiene and Attire:

You should shower on the day of the procedure to minimize the risk of infection. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing any jewelry or makeup. You should be accompanied by someone during the day of the procedure.

5. Preop Medications:

Once you reach the hospital, you will be given some shots before the procedure.

6. Pre-procedure Testing:

An ultrasound scan may also be performed to assess follicle development.

7. Semen Sample: Your husband will be asked to give a semen sample on the same day which will be used to fertilize the retrieved eggs. He also requires to have abstinence of 1-2 days.

What to expect after Oocyte Retrieval?

  1. Recovery from Sedation:

After the procedure, you will be monitored for a short time until the effects of sedation wear off. You are advised to avoid any strenuous activity for the rest of the day and get plenty of rest.

  1. Avoiding Sexual Intercourse:

You should avoid vaginal intercourse for a few days after the procedure to allow the ovaries to recover.

  1. Pain Management:

Mild cramping, spotting, or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen is common. You will be prescribed paracetamol tablets for 2-3 days.

If severe pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection (fever, chills, severe abdominal pain) occur, you should immediately contact the hospital.

  1. Monitoring for Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS):

You should be aware of signs of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) like abdominal swelling, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and rapid weight gain, especially if many eggs were collected. Any of these symptoms should be reported promptly.

Preparing yourself physically and mentally before undergoing IVF is highly essential.
